Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capitol city, should be at the top of any history buff's must-see list! With a rich cultural and historical heritage, Richmond truly encompasses all that Virginia's history has to offer.  Hot summers and mild winters make Richmond a great place to visit any time of the year.

To kick off your trip to historic Richmond, WhatsCheaper.com suggests first visiting the Tredegar Iron Works. You'll marvel at all this museum has to offer. Built in 1841, this building was originally home to the largest iron works production facility in the South during the time period. Playing a significant role in the American Civil War, this legendary building has now been converted into the American Civil War Center.  This museum is the first of its kind in the nation to incorporate exhibits from the Union, Confederate, and African American perspectives.

To learn more about the American Civil War in Richmond, WhatsCheaper.com recommends stopping by the Museum of the Confederacy. First opened as a museum in 1896, the Museum of the Confederacy offers a rare opportunity to see the most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the Confederate States of America. At the museum, you can also visit the White House of the Confederacy where Confederate President Jefferson Davis lived from 1861 to 1865.

For a change of pace from the museums, a visit to Belle Isle is sublime. A small island in the James River, Belle Isle is a Richmond city park. Accessible by a suspension footbridge, the island features numerous bike trails and a cliff for rock climbing. The views on Belle Isle are spectacular!  From the island, you can see the Tredegar Iron Works building, historic Hollywood Cemetery, and the Richmond skyline.

To experience all of the arts that Richmond has to offer, a visit to Byrd Theatre or Barksdale Theatre is best. Opened in 1928, Byrd Theatre is a non-profit theatre that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you are visiting Richmond in March, you won't want to miss the annual VCU French Film Festival held at the theatre.  Founded in 1953 at the historic Hanover Tavern, the Barksdale Theatre is recognized the leading professional theatre in Central Virginia.  The Barksdale Theatre Company acts out classic plays that include The Grapes of Wrath, The Sound of Music, and much more!

A perfect place to take the little ones is the Children's Museum of Richmond.  Located in the downtown section of the city, the museum is home to a number of thrilling exhibits.  Kids will love visiting the Living Tree House, complete with live frogs, turtles, and mice.  The museum also features an indoor Safari Train and giant pirate ship!

Of course, a visit to Richmond would not be complete without a trip to the State Capitol Building of Virginia. Located in Capitol Square, the State Capitol Building is open to visitors and guided tours are available Monday through Saturday.
